Storylineonline

March is National Reading Month.

Woo Hoo.

Did I say, once upon a time we lived in New Jersey, the Garden State, whose winters can give the Wisconsin winters run for their money?  Amaze and I read all the time, OK I read, she participated as she was a itty bitty bubbie.  She loved to be read to and asked a gazillion questions about what we were reading.  So when I had another munchkin and I was packing for the move to several states over, I needed to find ways where her love of reading will continue.

Guess what did I find?  Storylineonline.  A treasure trove of stories read by celebrities who are members of the Screen Actors Guild.  Oh! How I love them still. We listened from wide variety of readers including Darth Wedder AKA James Earl Jones and  Vice-President Al Gore who I bet had read many many stories to his kids.  May I share couple of them?  Thank you.

No Mirrors in My Nana’s House

Author: Ysaye M. Barnwell

Illustrator: Synthia Saint James

Read by: Tia & Tamara Mowry

This is a book based on a song.  I like the questions Tia & Tamara asks: “If there were no mirrors in the house, will there be less stereotyping?”.  I think “No mirror in my nana’s house” means  Grandma’s home = acceptance & non-judgement. This book is special and you may find us humming the bars from the song at random times.

Bad Case of Stripes

Author & Illustrator: David Shannon

Read by: Sean Astin

A book read by Sam Gamgee?

Added bonus: the book teaches kids to not be swayed by others AND eat their Lima Beans 🙂

Hope you like these stories.   Now your turn to reflect, give feedback and share.

  1. What a treasure trove you discovered! I imagine this would be an especially great resource for reluctant readers. I also have to say, I’m in love with “itty bitty bubbie” and am determined to figure out a way to work it into my conversations. (That might be tough since I’m an empty nester, but I’m going to give it a valiant try!)

    • Molly,

Our friends’ little toddler calls her brother bubbie. So I borrowed itty bitty bubbie from a little one (teachers!! collecting resources from everywhere:) ) I bet you will find a way to incorporate it in your conversation.

Yes, I agree Storybook Online will make a nice hook to pull reluctant readers in given we let them explore the books they like & do not rush them.

      Happy reading.

  2. I absolutely love this site and shared it with my grandkids. I’m going to have to share it with some elementary teachers I know also. Now, I’m going back to explore it a little more 🙂 . Thanks for sharing!

    • Brain,

      Please do.

We started it when our daughter was 3. We still go back and listen to / reread the books. On Storylineonline, we have found many books we otherwise would have missed.

I like that the kids get exposure literature as well as different readers – cadence, reading styles, age, gender & race- introducing the story.

      Thanks for visiting. Come again.

  3. I will definitely be checking out Storyline Online with my own little one. (He loves A Bad Case of Stripes!) I had no idea that March is National Reading Month. It is kind of always a reading month in my house, but we can celebrate extra this month!

  4. I have never heard of this site, though I will be sure to reference it often now! Not to mention, A Bad Case of Stripes is one of my favorites, but even better to be read by a celebrity! What a great way to encourage the love of reading! Thank you for sharing!

  5. From one Mom to another, Thanks all around.

Bad Case of Stripe was the first book we “read” on Storyline online. Cool book ya? Though we do feel for the poor little girl, it is a nice teachable story about not being swayed by others (and eating Lima beans :))

We lived in New Jersey when our daughter was itsy bitsy teeny tiny book lover. she loved me to read to her; on a snowbound day, we read 31 picturebooks in one sitting. When I had my second munchkin, I needed to find something / someone who will fill in for me. Besides, PBS, Between the lions, Postcards from buster and Magic school bus, I simply loved Storylineonline. And I still love it. Do read Enemy Pie & Guji Guji (don’t you like the sound, Guji, Guji) 🙂

    Happy Reading (and Sharing)
