Slice of Life: Election 2016

I voted for Hillary Clinton in both the primary election and 2016 Presidential Election.  To me, she was the most qualified candidate with proven record of public service and results.  Along with many others, I was devastated when the election was stolen from her.

Today’s slice is brewing for a long time.  Six words slice about voting rights from Kevin Hodgson and the comments on his post prompted me to share my views on election 2016 and the reason Hillary Clinton is not our sitting President at the moment.

Not pulling out a weed now because you don't care about it or don't want to spend time getting rid of it will result in your fighting of a war with an entire jungle later. _Purviben K. Trivedi-Ziemba

  1.  Media: Media decided to put Trump front and center when many more worthy candidates were pushed aside and forced to sit on “kids’ table.  The media (again!!) decided that TRPs were more important than journalistic oath and if giving coverage to the least qualified candidate brings TRP, so be it.
  2. Media: Instead of talking about Hillary Clinton’s work for Children, her contribution to civil rights movement and many year’s of service, the media chose to harp on the propaganda that she is disliked by masses and not trustworthy.  No one stand up for Clinton and asked where the data was coming from?
  3. We, as a nation failed to standing up to Bullying.  Instead of shutting off Trump’s abhorrent behavior or calling him on it, the Presidential candidates kept mum when victim of potshots were someone else but themselves. Supporters of Hillary as well as other candidates were cowed by bullying and propaganda. Ignoring the Weed of bullying resulted in USA getting a bully, a name caller tweeter-in-chief
  4. Hillary Clinton, a strong woman, fail to connect with many many people.  Her strength, her preparation translated as her arrogance. The sins of father, in this case the sins of husband, caught up with her and made many of the constituents against her.  Truth or not, the Democratic National Congress favoring her over Bernie Sanders created a huge backlash against her.  Many of Bernie supporters chose to vote against her so there will be no Clinton in the White house.
  5. Blustering, blubbering, incompetent, bigoted call whatever you call him but Donald Trump did connect with masses.   Many disenfranchised voters found him more relateable than so called career politicians.

  1. It’s interesting to read your thoughts about this. I’ve been totally discouraged by the entire political process in our country. I’ve blogged about my concerns with Trump and bullying before. It’s hard to teach children that behavior isn’t acceptable when they see it modeled in the highest office in the country.

  2. Media definitely had a hand in the election. trump did and said so many outrageous things. I think the media thought if they highlighted them, people would take notice and his support would lessen. But each and every thing brought his supporters to the forefront. It’s crazy.

He is also the master of deception and getting people to pay attention to one thing while he is doing something behind their back.

    I hope we survive…

  3. Deb,

One of the stories we were taught in first grade had moral that there are two ways we can shorten a previous person’s line: 1. Erase part of his line 2. Draw a line longer than the previous person’s line.

Media was too busy for TRPs. They did not fact check as they should have.

Re: Surviving Trump Presidency – as a nation, we are stronger than an individual. We need to dug in, build bridges and make sure to go out and vote, to make sure good candidates are elected.

Being Hindu, my ingrained belief is that we can work hard and smart toward a goal, the results are in All Mighty God’s hands. So I am doing my part.

  4. Rock and hard place? Ignore bullying; behavior persists. Respond to bullying; attention potentially fuels more bullying. What response constitutes uprooting the proverbial weed without unwittingly scattering its seeds?

  5. Brian,

Same approach I will take to a bully in playground should have been used here.

First and foremost he did NOT deserve a place at the head table & any time wasted on talking about his worth or what a joke it was.

Second & equally important, like any bully, at the first sign of disrespect from him, the media and his opponents should have called him out. On second, he should have been warn to cease spewing venom or risk being cut off. At third, he should have muffled. Think of a bully having to sit out after tantrum. Would a good teacher harp on his bad behavior and keep focusing on a bully?

The proverbial weed were shouting about the bad behavior and keep focus on a bully.

One more thing Clinton (and all of Trump’s opponents) fail to practice: Never underestimate your opponent / competition. Trump painted himself successfully as David against career politician Goliath.

I can talk and talk about it or do something constructive. My choice: GO back in the arena, teach civic lessons and practice kindness.
