an not so famous author?
If he had only chosen to name his narrator
Tito, Jimmy, John or Alex rather than Ishmael

I think the pronunciation of one’s name is one of the things you should dig your heels in about, but it does get tiring. In teaching, I always run across students who have unusual names and I try so hard to learn how to pronounce them right. Sadly, even by sixth grade, many of them are inclined to say that I can just pronounce their names however. But your name is you! We should show each other the courtesy of saying it correctly.

Sometimes, the names are different or one may be name challenged like I am. I try my best to pronounce correct names and course correct as necessary.
Emily, I hear you. Your name is special. I should know. My daughter has double first names with Amily as first half of her name.
Whitney, I agree with your views somewhat. I had a friend whose kids were told they do not know how to spell their name and their mom was wrong about spelling too (!!!!!! Think Schwin Vs. Scheween).
Re: Kids not caring how teachers pronounce their names, they might truly not care or like my kid, she realizes that it is fruitless to keep asking to remind how to say her name.
